2020年5月、米国研究機関が「中国海軍が日本の海上自衛隊に対して戦闘能力で大幅に優位に立った」との報告書を公表した。
その報告書とは、ワシントンの安全保障研究機関「戦略予算評価センター」（CSBA）の上級研究員で中国海洋戦略研究の権威「トシ・ヨシハラ氏」が中心となり作成した「日本の海洋パワーに対する中国の見解」というもの。

過去10年間、中国海軍は艦隊の規模、総トン数、火力などの重要な戦力の比較で日本の海上自衛隊を追い越した。
中国が海軍力で日本を凌ぐことは、歓迎されない戦略的傾向をもたらす可能性がある。
すでに互いに疑惑を抱いている2国（日本と中国）の海軍の敵対関係、東京と北京のさらに激しい競争に拍車をかけるかもしれない。
日本の海上自衛隊が中国海軍に逆転されたことは、将来発生するであろう軍事的危機において日本が中国の軍事的圧力に屈する可能性が高くなったことを意味する。
それは、日本の同盟の責任を果たす日本の能力に対する米国の信頼を損なう恐れがあり、日米の安全保障関係に亀裂をもたらす。

The study finds that Beijing anticipates an intensifying naval rivalry with Tokyo in the coming years. The report further finds that the prospects of naval superiority will persuade Chinese statesmen and commanders to adopt an offensive strategy in a local maritime conflict against Japan. Yoshihara shows that the local naval imbalance, if left unaddressed, will strain the U.S.-Japan alliance and destabilize Asia. The study urges Washington and Tokyo to recognize the Chinese challenge, act swiftly, and restore the naval balance.

この報告書は、日本の自衛隊と中国海軍との「具体的な戦闘シミュレーション」をしたのではなく、単に「艦隊の規模、総トン数、火力」などを単純比較したに過ぎない。
それでも、総兵力で中国海軍が日本の海上自衛隊よりも優位に立ったのは事実で、そのために、日本とアメリカの海軍力を引き上げることを求めている。
つまり「中国の脅威に対して日米が協力・連携すべき」という趣旨と思われる。
但し、当ブログの予想では、尖閣列島など局地戦については「そうりゅう型潜水艦」を用する日本の海上自衛隊が勝利すると思われる。
